Controls & Keybindings

For How to Fish controls, Steam players report W/A/S/D movement, E interaction, R reload, B lure changes and number-key inventory slots on PC; confirm cast, reel and any remaps in your current settings. Patch 1.0.11 confirms toggle aiming, toggle sprinting and hold-to-attack options. Neither that patch nor Patch 1.0.9 confirms a separate Easy Fishing switch that removes line tension.

Reviewed 2026-09-26. Evidence scope: Official Patches 1.0.9 and 1.0.11; exact bindings need an in-game check. This guide is updated when key route details can be checked.

01Find the binding that applies to your device

Open the settings from the main menu before entering a timed run, or pause once you are safely away from a boss. Read the action name and the input displayed for the keyboard, mouse or connected controller you are actually using. If a guide names a key that differs from your screen, use the in-game binding as the current answer. Record the action rather than memorizing a button from a different controller layout.

Steam player discussions refer to W/A/S/D movement, E interaction, R reload, B lure selection and number keys for inventory slots on a PC layout. Use those as starting checks, not a guarantee for a remapped or newer build. Test cast, reel, interact, drop and attack one action at a time in a quiet area because their active bindings may differ. Change only one binding or behavior setting before retesting, so a failed action is easier to diagnose.

02Use the confirmed aim, sprint and attack options

Official Patch 1.0.11 added an option to toggle aiming and a separate option to toggle sprinting. It also added an option to hold to attack, which can change how continuous input feels during a fight. Open those settings and choose the behavior that matches the way you play before interpreting a missed action as a broken key. These are input behavior options, not published changes to fish health or line tension.

A toggle stays active until the relevant input is used again, while a hold action depends on keeping that input pressed. If aiming seems stuck, inspect the toggle choice before resetting every binding. If movement feels unexpectedly slow, check sprint behavior and whether another action is active. Compare the settings screen with the behavior you observe rather than assuming one control scheme is universal.

03Separate difficulty from fishing controls

Patch 1.0.9 introduced an overall difficulty option in both the main menu and the in-game settings. Its published Easy mode changes creature health and damage, and Hard mode changes those same combat properties in the opposite direction. The announcement does not describe an independent setting that prevents a fishing line from snapping. If a video calls something “easy fishing,” check whether it means the overall Easy difficulty or a setting visible in that video’s build.

When an encounter feels harder after a settings change, note the selected difficulty before comparing damage or time to kill with an older guide. Do not assume that Easy difficulty changes lure pools, Drip odds or achievement requirements; those effects are not specified in the patch note. If your current game displays another fishing option, capture the exact label and version before treating it as a current feature. This keeps an accessibility tip useful without promising an unverified mechanic.

04Check a controller or Steam Deck setup safely

How to Fish became Steam Deck Verified in Patch 1.0.11, but that label is not a published button-by-button map. Start with the game’s displayed prompts and check whether Steam Input is presenting the layout you expect. If a prompt changes after connecting a controller, test a harmless interaction before entering combat. A custom Steam Input layout or remap can make another player’s button diagram wrong for your device.

A September 23 player report describes gamepad gyro emulating a mouse, followed by keyboard prompts appearing instead of controller prompts. If your setup mixes mouse and controller signals, briefly test one input method at a time before changing every button mapping. That test separates prompt switching from an unresponsive action but is not an official fix for mixed-input support. Keep a note of the affected action, device, Steam Input layout and patch when reporting the problem.

05Test casting and reeling without guessing a hidden assist

Choose a calm shoreline and make one short cast before testing a longer one with the same rod and lure. Observe the in-game feedback when a creature bites and change your input in small steps instead of holding the reel continuously through every warning. If the line breaks, note whether the result came from tension, an encounter attack or an input change. Repeating the same setup is more informative than changing rod, lure, difficulty and controls together.

A September 13 player report says remapped keyboard controls did not take effect at launch until the keyboard options screen was opened. If a custom key fails after starting the game, open that screen once and retry the same harmless action before rebinding it. Treat this as a reported diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix, and save a screenshot of the binding and patch if it persists. The confirmed 1.0.11 options are aim toggle, sprint toggle and hold-to-attack; this guide does not recommend an unverified Easy Fishing switch.

What this guide can confirm

  • Official Patch 1.0.11 adds toggle aiming, toggle sprinting, hold-to-attack and Steam Deck Verified status; it does not publish a universal controller button map.
  • Official Patch 1.0.9 adds overall Easy and Hard difficulty and lists creature health and damage changes, without documenting an Easy Fishing line-tension switch.
  • Exact default keys and custom Steam Input mappings require inspection in the current game build.
  • Dated Steam player reports describe PC key examples, mixed-input prompt switching and custom bindings that load after opening keyboard settings.
